MathPen

Answers to common questions about using MathPen, along with troubleshooting steps and how to reach us if you need more help.

Getting started

After installing MathPen from the App Store or Google Play, open the app and follow the on-screen setup steps. You'll be able to choose a starting grade level or topic area, which you can change at any time from the app's settings.

No account creation is required to begin practicing — MathPen is designed to get a child into their first exercise quickly.

Starting a practice session

From the home screen, tap a topic or module tile to begin a new practice session. Each session presents a series of questions designed to be worked through in order.

  1. Open the MathPen app.
  2. Choose an operation (or topic) from the home screen.
  3. Set the level — digit range, number of questions, and an optional timer.
  4. Tap "Start practicing" and work through each question by hand.

Selecting a learning module

MathPen organizes practice into modules by topic and difficulty. Tap the module picker on the home screen to browse the available modules, then tap a module to view its description before starting.

If a module looks too easy or too difficult, you can switch to a different one at any time — progress within a module is saved automatically so you can return to it later.

Writing answers

MathPen uses handwriting input instead of a keyboard, so children solve problems the way they would on paper. Use a finger or a compatible stylus to write each digit of the answer directly into the answer boxes.

  • Write one digit per box; MathPen recognizes each digit shortly after you lift your finger or stylus and replaces it with a clean number.
  • Use the separate scratch area to carry, borrow, or work through long division — that space is for working and isn't marked.
  • To fix a digit, write over it or clear it and write it again.
  • If handwriting isn't being recognized well, try writing a little larger and more clearly within the box.

Moving to the next question

Once an answer is written, tap "Submit" (or the forward arrow) to check the answer and move to the next question in the module. You can review the previous question by using the back arrow before continuing.

Viewing results

At the end of a practice session, MathPen shows a summary of the questions completed, so a child (or parent) can see how the session went. Session summaries are viewable from within the app for recently completed sessions.

Restoring purchases

If you've reinstalled MathPen or switched to a new device, you can restore any prior purchases through your platform account rather than purchasing again.

  1. Open MathPen and go to Settings.
  2. Tap "Restore Purchases."
  3. Sign in with the same App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) account used for the original purchase, if prompted.
  4. Purchases linked to that account will be restored automatically.

Purchases are tied to your platform account (Apple ID or Google account), not to a MathPen account, so restoring only works when signed in with the original purchasing account.

Family Sharing guidance

MathPen can be shared with family members through your platform's built-in family sharing features, where supported.

iOS (Apple Family Sharing): If Family Sharing is enabled on your Apple ID and the purchase is eligible for sharing, family members can access MathPen through the App Store without purchasing it separately. Each family member should install the app on their own device and, if needed, use "Restore Purchases" from MathPen's settings.

Android (Google Play family library): If your Google Play family library is set up and the app has been shared to it, family members can install MathPen from their own Google Play account. Availability of a title through the family library is managed by Google Play and can vary.

If a shared purchase doesn't appear as expected, check your platform's family sharing settings first, since MathPen relies on the App Store or Google Play to manage sharing eligibility.

Troubleshooting

Handwriting isn't being recognized

Try writing a little larger and closer to the center of the canvas, and make sure the screen is clean and free of moisture. Restarting the app can also help if recognition seems consistently off.

App is slow or unresponsive

Close and reopen the app. If the issue continues, restart your device and confirm you're running the latest version of MathPen from the App Store or Google Play.

Purchases aren't restoring

Confirm you're signed in to the same Apple ID or Google account used for the original purchase, then use "Restore Purchases" in Settings. A brief internet connection is required for this to complete.

Progress seems to have reset

Progress is stored on the device MathPen is installed on. Reinstalling the app or switching devices without an active account connection can affect what's shown. If this happens, please reach out to support with details so we can look into it.

Is MathPen free to use?

MathPen is free to start — the Addition module is included free with full features. Additional modules can be unlocked through a purchase in the app. Current details are shown on the App Store or Google Play listing.

Does MathPen require an internet connection?

Most practice features are designed to work without a constant connection, though an internet connection may be needed for things like restoring purchases or downloading app updates.

Can more than one child use MathPen on the same device?

MathPen can be used by more than one child on a shared device. Refer to the in-app settings for any available options related to switching between users.

What devices and OS versions does MathPen support?

Supported iOS and Android versions are listed on the app's App Store and Google Play pages, which are kept current with each release.

Recognition accuracy can be affected by writing size, stylus type, and screen conditions. See the Troubleshooting section above for tips that often help.

How do I request a refund?

Refunds are handled through the App Store or Google Play, according to their respective policies, since purchases are processed by those platforms rather than directly by MathPen.
